American Southwest Photo Workshop

The American Southwest Photo Workshop

July 8-12, 2012

The landscape of the American Southwest offers some of the most scenic and unique photo opportunities in the world. From the southern Sonoran Desert to the upper Great Basin, there is a huge array of landscape changes, colors and plant life.

During our trip, participants will not only photograph the landscapes, but also experience and capture the local culture of each area. The participants will learn how to photograph these scenes under a number of different lighting situations including, sunrise and sunset, backlighting as well as nighttime photography. Photo critiques and post-processing techniques will also be conducted.

Our schedule:

- Saguaro National Park and Lost Dutchman State Park – July 8-9
- Monument Valley and Antelope Canyon – July 10
- Arches National Park – July 11-12

July 8-9 – Saguaro National Park and Lost Dutchman State Park

Standing over 40 ft. tall and over 100 years old, the giant saguaro cacti are an iconic symbol of the southern desert of the United States. On July 8, we’ll meet in the afternoon at Saguaro National Park and we’ll photograph the saguaro throughout the afternoon and evening. During the night session, the photographers will learn how to photograph the saguaro with the Milky Way as well as ambient light from the moon and fill flash. On July 9, we’ll shoot sunrise at Saguaro National Park and then travel to Lost Dutchman State Park for afternoon and sunset shots of the saguaro and the Superstition Mountains.

July 10 – Navajo Nation

At sunrise we’ll photograph landscape of the world-famous Monument Valley from a number of different areas in the park. We’ll then travel to Page, AZ to explore the Lower Antelope Canyon. Midday we’ll hike and photograph the famous Horseshoe Bend just south of Page. In the afternoon we’ll travel back to Monument Valley to take portrait pictures of the Navajo with traditional clothing as well as on horseback.

July 11-12 – Arches National Park

In Arches National Park, we will photograph a number of locations, including Delicate Arch, Landscape Arch, Balanced Rock and many more! Night photo sessions will also be conducted in which we’ll use both ambient light and flash to capture the scenes.

        Transportation and Accommodations

Hotels, meals and transportation are not included in the ticket price. Transportation must be done on your own or through carpooling with others.
